T602--Psychhophysiological Responses to Media

Dr. Potter--First Semester,2006-2007

Class Requirements

Email Comments (20% of your final grade):

As you expected, you will do the readings each day and post responses to them. Class is Monday & Wednesday mornings. Your comments are due by NOON the day before (Sundays & Tuesdays).

You will use the address t602_potter_fall-2006@oncourse.iu.edu.

Or, if you find it more convenient, just use this link to launch your email program with the correct address.

Your postings should always include:

I will provide you with brief written or typed responses to these--along with a grade that expresses my assessment of the depth of thought exhibited. Sometimes these will be in time for class; other times I will need to play "catch up" on the weekends. But, I will provide you feedback. I will grade these using the following scale:

4--Outstanding set of comments, showing a thorough reading of the assigned articles and informed scholarly wrestling with the ideas expressed,

3--An above average set of comments that show you have read the assigned articles and thought about their meaning,

2--An average set of comments that indicate you read the assigned articles prior to class.

Practicum (30%):

For this requirement, you will work in pairs to be the lab instructor for a specific topic, measure or recording or analytic technique. You should prepare a demonstration lecture and an in-class practicum assignment for people to work through which will allow them to collect the measure you are teaching. When you are finished, the class should understand the basics of your topic, how to set up the equipment, set the filters or settings and collect the data. Actual data should be collected during the class period--hopefully by both the lab-instructor team and other students in class. You should keep this goal in mind when deciding on stimuli to use because the 75 minutes will go by quickly.

The lab-instructor team will be also be responsible for the subsequent class meeting. During that time they should do three things:

  1. Give a teaching presentation of HOW they analyzed their data, complete with screen-shots of the analysis program and instructions to hand out to other students.
  2. Give a related presentation of the results of the analyzed data collected during their practicum.
  3. Lead a class discussion of a reserve article chosen (by you) for its application of their measure to questions related to processing of media. You will need to provide me with a PDF copy of this article at least 1 week prior to your discussion so that I can upload it to Oncourse CL for the class.

I do expect you to work with me in preparing your demonstration and assignment. I will be available to help design issues and setting up the lab to allow your practicum to occur. You are encouraged to prepare for this well in advance, however. Procrastination on your part will not make it an emergency on mine.

Exams (25% each):
The midterm will be a take home exam.
The format of the final exam is still to be determined.
